-" مرکز نجات مفهوم بود، من هم در محوطه فرود هلیکوپتر شروع به بیواک کردن میکنم."

برای لحظه ای ایستادم و به اطرافم نگاه کردم، دوش آب گرم و یک تخت خواب نرم و راحت چیزهائی بود که امشب از دست داده بودم. ساعت سه عصر اوایل فوریه (بهمن ماه) و موقعیتم دوازده هزارپائی (3600 متری) کوههای راکی در کلورادو بود.در موقعیتی که بودم تا شعاع 10 مایلی دید مناسبی داشت. باد شروع به وزیدن کرده بود و ابرهای میانی بسرعت داشتند جلوی نور کم فروغ خورشید را می گرفتند. مرکز هواشناسی گزارش داده بود که یک توده هوا به سرعت طی شب آینده وارد منطقه خواهد شد. بعد از دو ساعت هوا تاریک می شد و درجه هوا هم فوراً به زیر صفر می رفت. وسایلی که در کوله پشتی داشتم در ذهنم مرور کردم .وقتی بیل کوهنوردی را برداشتم و رفتم که پناهگاهی برای خودم بسازم به خودم گفتم شب درازی در پیش است.
